Milazzo, the ancient Mylai, has always been an important naval port.
It was the location of the decisive sea battle of the First Punic War in 260 BC.
The medieval fortress built by Frederick II in the 13th Century was renewed during the Spanish period.
Milazzo is also an important fishing port and is known as a connection port to the Aeolian Islands.
To reach the islands, you sail along the peninsula.
